The stress corrosion cracking resistance of HDPE GM was monitored using single point-notched constant tensile load tests following the procedure in ASTM D5397 ( ASTM 2007a ). Dumbbell-shaped specimens were prepared using the Clicker cutting press, notched 20% of the total thickness, and immersed in a solution containing 10% Igepal CO630 and 90% water at 50C.

Extensive photochromic glass spallation following damage is observed in the CGS. Damage is induced by a combination of water chemistry, large pressure and velocity forces and radiation levels expected in a radiation field. Initial damage is observed in the form of pits, cracks, and inclusions of glass particles. Increased duration of exposition results in more severe and extensive damage. The rate of damage propagation is correlated with the size of the glass particle. No correlation is observed between the surface roughness of the glass before damage and the severity of damage.
The average daily production of LLW in the United States is estimated to be 100,000 tons per year. Products containing at least 0.1% LLW are subject to regulatory requirements and a very stringent track and trace program. Significant costs are incurred for these activities: (1) a wide variety of LLW constituents need to be identified for analysis and disposition, (2) equipment, labor, and other costs are incurred for LLW treatment, and (3) reporting expenses and accounting are required. The key to containment is to identify LLW constituents, the quantity, and the location of LLW production. The LLW system must be designed to prevent LLW constituents from reaching groundwater......
